Animal Welfare FAQ

Animal welfare guides how we care for our animal family, how our experiences are designed, and how our team makes decisions each day. We welcome thoughtful questions about animals in human care and aim to be open about our approach while continuing to learn from animal-care professionals, veterinary professionals, and the regulatory agencies involved in their care.

What is an animal ambassador?

Animal ambassadors help create opportunities for people to learn about wildlife, animal behavior, responsible stewardship, and conservation. The animals participating in our programs are part of Noah's Ark Sanctuary's animal family. Their individual needs come first, and participation in an experience is based on the animal, not simply the schedule. Our educators use these opportunities to help guests better understand the species they are meeting and the responsibility that comes with caring for animals.

Where do the animals live?

Our animals are under the care of Noah's Ark Sanctuary. Their care extends well beyond the time guests see them during an experience. Daily routines include appropriate nutrition, habitat care, enrichment, social opportunities where appropriate, rest, observation, and veterinary care. The cafe is one part of a much larger animal-care and educational mission.

Do animals have to participate in experiences?

No. Animal participation is based on the individual animal and its needs that day. Animals can move away, rest, or not participate. Our team watches behavior throughout each experience and can adjust or end participation when appropriate. This is also why the animals participating in an experience may vary. We do not believe an animal should be required to participate simply because a particular animal appeared on a schedule or in a photograph. Animal welfare comes before guest expectations.

Why can't you guarantee which animals I will meet?

Because their routines and needs can change from day to day. Rest, behavior, veterinary needs, social dynamics, and normal animal-care considerations can all affect participation. Unless a particular experience specifically identifies an animal or species, the animals participating may vary. We understand that guests may have a favorite animal they hope to meet, and our team will always do its best to create a meaningful experience while respecting the animals' needs.

What is your position on keeping exotic animals as pets?

Meeting an animal should inspire respect for that species, not necessarily a desire to own one. Many exotic and nontraditional animals have complex behavioral, social, environmental, dietary, and veterinary needs that can be extremely difficult to meet in a typical household. Part of responsible animal education is helping people understand those realities before considering any animal. Our message is simple: learn about them, respect them, and help protect them.

How are your experiences designed around animal welfare?

Our experiences are intentionally guided and structured. Group sizes are managed, educators remain present, animal behavior is monitored, and participation can change based on the needs of the animals. We also continually evaluate our programs. Animal welfare is not something we consider once when an experience is created. It requires observation, adjustment, and a willingness to change how something is done when the animals' needs indicate a change is appropriate.

Why allow people to meet animals at all?

We believe education can create empathy. Seeing an animal, learning about its behavior, and hearing its story can turn an abstract idea about wildlife into something people understand personally. But access must come with responsibility. Our goal is not simply for someone to leave saying they met an animal. We want guests to leave knowing something they did not know before and with greater respect for the species they encountered.

How do you respond when someone raises an animal-welfare concern?

We listen. A concern does not automatically mean something is wrong, but it deserves to be considered. Depending on the issue, that may mean reviewing the animal's behavior, consulting animal-care staff, seeking veterinary guidance, reviewing an experience, or working with the appropriate regulatory professionals. If something should be improved, we want to improve it. Animal care is an ongoing responsibility, and responsible organizations should always be willing to learn.

What role does veterinary care play?

Veterinary care is an important part of responsible animal management. Our animals are monitored by the people who care for them, and veterinary professionals are involved when medical evaluation, treatment, preventative care, or diagnostic testing is appropriate. We also believe medical conclusions about an animal should come from qualified veterinary professionals rather than assumptions based solely on a photograph, video, or brief observation.

How does my visit support the animals?

Your visit helps support the broader mission of Noah's Ark Sanctuary, including animal care, education, and the continued development of programs centered around responsible stewardship. As our organization grows, we also want that success to benefit other organizations doing meaningful work in animal rescue, wildlife rehabilitation, conservation, and education. For us, success should create an opportunity to do more good.

Our Commitment

We know people will have different opinions about animals in human care, and we respect the fact that these conversations matter. Our responsibility is to keep the animals at the center of the decisions we make. That means listening, learning, working with qualified professionals, meeting applicable regulatory requirements, and continuing to evaluate how we can do better.
