Opossum vs Possum: The Real Difference
The short answer
There is no real difference for anyone in the United States. Opossum is the correct, scientific common name for Didelphis virginiana, the only marsupial native to North America. Possum is simply the everyday nickname most Americans use for the exact same animal.
Where the confusion comes from
True possums are a separate, unrelated animal family that lives in Australia, more closely related to kangaroos than to anything in a Florida backyard. Early settlers in Australia borrowed the name from the American opossum because the animals looked vaguely similar, and the shortened nickname possum made its way back into everyday American English.
Bottom line
If you saw it playing dead in your driveway last night, it was an opossum, and possum is a perfectly fine thing to call it. Both names point to the same gentle, tick-eating, remarkably resilient animal.
Is a possum the same as an opossum?
In North America, yes, almost always. What Americans call a possum is the Virginia opossum, the only marsupial native to the United States and Canada. True possums are a completely different, unrelated animal family found in Australia.
So why do two names exist?
Early European settlers in Australia saw an animal that reminded them of the opossum they had heard about from the Americas, and shortened the name to possum. The nickname stuck, and today most Americans use possum and opossum interchangeably for the same backyard animal.
What is the real difference then?
For anyone in the United States, there is no difference. Opossum is the scientifically correct name, possum is the common nickname, and both point to the same gentle, tick-eating marsupial. True Australian possums are a separate animal entirely, more closely related to kangaroos than to anything in an American backyard.
