What Do Capybaras Eat?

In the wild

Capybaras are grazers. Grasses and aquatic plants make up almost the entire wild menu, clipped by front teeth that never stop growing and are kept in shape by the grinding work of a grass diet.

The surprising part

Like rabbits, capybaras re-digest some of their food to extract every nutrient from tough grasses. It sounds unglamorous, and it is one of the adaptations that lets a 100 pound animal thrive on lawn clippings.

In expert care

Our capybaras eat a nutritionist-guided diet built around hay and fresh vegetation. During select sessions, guests get to offer approved foods by hand, which is exactly as delightful as it sounds and always on the capybara's terms.

Hand an approved snack to the largest rodent on Earth.
